In 1976 a group of citizens who recognized the historical significance and unique culture of Old Colorado City came together to preserve its history. This group was very informal and met at local restaurants to discuss local history. In 1981 they elected the first president of the Old Colorado City Historical Society. Loyal Westsiders quickly joined, and before they knew it, OCCHS grew into a legitimate organization with educational programs and monthly meetings. In 1992 the Society finalized the purchase of the First Baptist Church building at 1 S 24th Street, and in 1997 the Old Colorado City History Center opened its doors. Today, the History Center consists of a gallery with displays featuring local history, a research library, bookstore, and archives. Our calendar is filled with historical events and educational programs. All of this is run by our group of dedicated volunteers. Our Mission A. To promote an interest in local history. B.
